RD Exam FAQ: Should I Be Using Flash Cards to Study?

As a RD Exam tutor I have a love/hate relationship with flash cards. There are 2 main things I don't like about flashcards:
That study style is more aligned with memorizing material. If you have taken any of my courses/listened to the podcast, you know that I put a focus on understanding the material because the application is what counts when it comes to the exam. The exam is very vocab heavy, but you want to understand the topic and be able to apply it correctly to practice questions.
Flash cards can take a lot of time to make. When I get on a discovery call and a prospective student shows me their 500 flash cards I can already guess that they spent too much time making study materials vs studying for the exam. While hand writing notes and flashcards is good for muscle memory you want to be sure that you are making material that would be helpful. You don't need a flash card for every and there are great tools like Quizlet that can help make a lot of flashcards fast!
But you might be saying…wait Dana I love a flashcard!? Flash cards can be a great tool and this is how I would use them:
Focus on making flashcards on topic you always get stuck on that require quick recall. I recommend making flashcards for topics like vocab, calorie/protein needs and math equations.
Don't use only flash cards to test your knowledge. Another tool that is a great companion to flashcards are blank study guides. A blank study guide is a great tool to see what you actually don't know. Any term or fact you don't know throw that on a flash card.
Have another person quiz you on your flashcards. While they can be a great tool to study from, when studying independently it can be easy to “cheat” and flip that card over before you are really testing your knowledge. Using the flash cards with another person is a great way to really put yourself on the stop and have that active learning!
