Are you feeling overwhelmed or uncertain about your readiness to take the Registered Dietitian (RD) exam? Many students grapple with whether to push their exam date—and the decision can significantly impact your success. In this blog post we explore how to best answer this question.
The first step in determining if you should postpone is evaluating your study timeline. Dana advises that the two to three-week mark before your exam is the ideal window for a candid assessment. Why? Because at this point, you have enough time to address any issues that may jeopardize your success. Waiting until just one week before the exam is risky. If you realize you're not fully prepared at that stage, your options become limited—and cramming or last-minute fixes are less effective. During the 2-3 week window, you can realistically adjust your study plan, review weak areas, and avoid unnecessary stress. Take a close look at your current progress. Are you on track to complete all your planned study topics? Are you feeling rushed despite your efforts? If the answer is yes, it’s a red flag that your schedule might be too aggressive, and you risk not covering everything thoroughly. Here are some important questions to ask yourself:
1) Does Your Schedule Match Your Exam Date?
Having a realistic schedule is a must for the RD exam. When you think about your past weeks of studying are you consistently meeting your study milestones and do you have enough time left for review and practice exams? Rushing through the material and not looping back on trouble areas are common reasons students do not pass the exam. Learn about making a realistic schedule in the Free Masterclass.
2) Are Practice Exam Scores Showing Progress?
Practice exams are a reliable indicator of your readiness. At the 2 to 3 week mark, compare your current scores to earlier ones. Ideally, you should see consistent improvement—your scores inching closer to your goal. If scores stagnate or decline, it indicates your study methods may need adjustment. You may need more focused review, targeted practice, or additional support like tutoring.
3) Is Your Confidence Growing?
Even if your practice scores are improving, having confidence for the RD exam is just as critical. Feeling anxious, dread, or unprepared can undermine your performance on exam day. High stress and anxiety can impair recall and decision-making during the exam. A confident mindset can boost your performance and overall experience. Working with a tutor is a great way to boost confidence!
4) Do You Have Life Events and External Stressors That Are Impacting Your Studying?
Life outside studying can significantly impact your exam readiness. Important milestones or adverse events—like engagement, weddings, illnesses, or family emergencies—can divert your focus and diminish your preparedness. If you're anticipating such events in the weeks leading up to your exam, it’s wise to reschedule. Your mental clarity and focus are essential for passing, and external stressors can hinder your ability to perform at your best.
How to Reschedule if Your Decide to Push Your Exam: Suppose you're considering postponing. How do you do it effectively? Keep these tips in mind:
Limit the delay:
Generally, push within a 1-2 week window unless extraordinary circumstances dictate a longer postponement.
Set a new plan:
Use the additional time to focus on weak areas, incorporate targeted practice, or seek expert support.
Consider tutoring:
If time is tight or concepts are challenging, personalized guidance can accelerate your learning.
Adjust your study schedule:
Re-evaluate your timeline based on your new exam date and set achievable milestones.
When to Seek Help from a Tutor:
If doubts persist or you're unsure about your progress, expert support can make a difference. Personalized tutoring helps identify gaps, refine strategies, and boost confidence—tailoring your prep to your unique needs. Remember, asking for help is a strength, not a weakness.
